Relieving pain and keeping a wound closed.

SutureSafe is a natural extension of Canica's innovative wound closure systems which are used worldwide. Canica's patented principle of using elastic forces to close wounds is applied in SutureSafe to keep wounds closed as they heal. Equally important, SutureSafe relieves tension on the suture line; reducing scarring at the same time as it reduces the pain of tension on sutures (or staples) that hold the wound closed.

Although superficially looking like a run-of-the-mill adhesive bandage, SutureSafe is much more. It has several unique elements.

1. It is transparent; the suture line is clearly visible at all times.
2. It has an elastic silicone strip that relieves tension on the suture line.
3. Above the silicone is a non-elastic film that first ensures the elastic film is set at the correct tension when SutureSafe is applied. Thereafter, that non-elastic film protects the wound from sudden movements (coughing, sneezing, etc.) that could otherwise cause the wound to re-open. It transfers these sudden forces from the suture line to the adhesive strips on either side, protecting the wound from the sudden strain.

SutureSafe can be used by anyone faced with surgery.

Background to Canica Design and SutureSafe

Canica Design was started in Lee Valley Tools Ltd. with the mission of designing a safety scalpel with superior ergonomic features and, in short, to make tools for surgeons. In the process, we were asked to help solve the mechanical problems surgeons faced in wound closure. Working primarily with the original surgeon who had asked for the scalpel (Dr. Michael Bell of Ottawa), we decided to separate the company from Lee Valley because of the very different market it was engaged in and proceeded to develop a series of wound closure systems, the most famous of which is used by the U.S. Army to close wounds caused by bomb damage to soldiers' limbs.

SutureSafe is a natural outgrowth of this activity.
